The European Wool Group (EWG) is an inter-professional organisation founded in May 1997 which brings together major professional organisations involved in the producing and processing of European wool.

The EWG's aims are to improve the value of European produced wool and represent members' needs to the European Union and other institutions.

 On the 25th October 2001 a meeting was held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, with the support of two sheep breeders associations (UPRA Est à laine mérinos in France and Rassenausschuss Merinolandschaf in Germany), the Group "Greens/ALE" in the European Parliament and the European Wool Group: "Ensuring the future of the wool sector and of Merino sheep breeds in Europe".

Members of the European Parliament and deleguates of sheepbreeders organisations from six countries attended this meeting.

Over 100 persons from 17 countries participated in the First European Wool Conference

"Sheep breeding and quality wool production"
organised by the European Wool Group on 14-17 October 1999 in Mérida in Exrtremadura (Spain).
